Scarborough Borough Council’s Support For Scarborough UTC

Scarborough Borough Council has been a key sponsor of the UTC partnership right from the start, supporting feasibility and the development of the business case, and participating in interviews with the DfE.

The Council, and its public and private sector partners, are committed to delivering a skills vision that will make Scarborough Borough the most highly skilled coastal community in England by 2030.

A key element of this objective is Scarborough University Technical College, servicing the Yorkshire Coast and its hinterland.  It will provide a bespoke, highly skilled, technically qualified, well paid and motivated workforce to support growth in the engineering, manufacturing and construction sectors thereby ensuring long term sustainable economic growth.

Location is always critical and the UTC is co-located with Coventry University Scarborough Campus and the new Sports Village to provide a unique centre of higher education, further education and sporting excellence in the town.

Looking forward, the Borough is heading towards an era of unprecedented economic growth with investment in the next five years in excess of £2 billion. This includes a new potash mine which has the potential to make the area a world leader in high value potash production and  the development of the Dogger Bank windfarm which will be the largest windfarm in the world. The Council is also committed to the delivery of 10,000 new homes in this timeframe which will see a population growth of circa 20,000 people. In total, the Council is forecasting the creation of up to 8,000 new jobs during this period.

However, in order to deliver this ambitious growth programme, investment in the local skills base is critical. The Yorkshire Coast needs a reliable and regular supply of engineers and technically qualified young people to support its economy. Through Scarborough UTC, we believe we will deliver the right skills at all levels, from mechanics and technicians to technical designers and higher level graduate engineers.
