Sirius Minerals Support For Scarborough UTC
About Sirius Minerals
Sirius Minerals Plc is a UK publicly-listed potash development company. The Sirius Minerals Project is a proposal to build a state-of-the-art potash mine south of Whitby and transport the mined ore, via an underground tunnel, to Teesside, where it will be granulated and exported to supply a growing global market.
The Project represents a £1.7 billion investment that will create over 1,000 direct jobs and thousands more in supply and support businesses across the region. Sirius Minerals has a commitment to employing as many local people as possible and Scarborough UTC will help us to grow a local workforce with the skills and qualities that we need.
Why Sirius Minerals supports the UTC
It is widely recognised that there is a shortage of engineers and engineering technicians across all industrial sectors. Sirius Minerals welcomes the UTC as it will help to broaden the career opportunities for young people and create a rich source of skills for Sirius Minerals and other businesses.
What Sirius Minerals can offer UTC students
Sirius Minerals will offer at least two work experience placements each year to Scarborough UTC students, together with employability workshops and seminars. We will also work with UTC staff to develop a number of work projects, which are aligned to the UTC curriculum..
What future careers at Sirius Minerals may be available to UTC students
By the time Sirius Minerals is in full production the Company will employ a large number of fully qualified engineers across the various engineering disciplines. This will include around 250 qualified engineering technicians.
We are committed to taking on at least 50 Engineering Apprentices over the next five years in preparation for when the Project is operational, and will also provide 15 places on the Sirius Minerals Undergraduate Programme targeted at students studying engineering. These opportunities will be available to young people across the local area, including UTC students.
In addition there will be a large number of non-engineering roles throughout the Company including finance, IT, administration, human resources, corporate development and sales and marketing.
Our commitment to equal opportunities
Sirius Minerals is an equal opportunities employer. We treat all our employees and job applicants with dignity, respect and fairness. We will strive to create opportunities for those who are currently under-represented in the mining industry. For example, we will work with education institutions to try to increase the number of women in the industry, and technical professions in general.
Supporting continuous professional development
Training and career development forms a central part of working at Sirius Minerals. The apprentices, junior tradespeople and graduates the Company employs will have the opportunity to go on to become the managers and fulfill senior roles in the business in years to come. All Sirius Minerals staff will benefit from a programme of Continuous Professional Development and be supported to gain qualifications that are relevant to their roles and that will help them to progress in their careers.
