Scarborough UTC’s Yr10 visit to HMNBs Portsmouth 9th – 13th October 2017

This year’s first visit to the Royal Naval engineering facilities, in and around Portsmouth, took place last month with a dozen of Scarborough UTC’s yr10 students joining forces with students from Derby UTC, sleeping on board HMS Bristol (an old type 82 destroyer that used for training purposes), and experiencing life as a Royal Navy engineer.

The students were exposed to all aspects of engineering within the Navy, from Communication Systems and Design Engineering to Cyber Security, Weapons Engineering to Marine Engineering, and Aviation and Electrical Engineering. Students got involved with hands on projects and gained an in-depth understanding about how engineering fits into everyday life; this helped to reinforce the students’ decisions to attend the UTC in the first place. Lectures, serials and workshops were run out of HMS Sultan and HMS Collingwood during the week, and the students also had chance to develop their leadership, communication and teamwork skills at the Royal Naval Leadership Academy. When all of the UTC students were questioned at the end of the visit, 80% said that they would consider an engineering career in the Navy, and 40% were ready to start filling in the paperwork there and then; we did point out that they had a little time to wait.

“The naval personnel were fantastic, engaging and really knew their stuff!” was one of the many quotes from our yr10 girls.
