Last week saw success for one of our students at the inaugural Made in Yorkshire Business Awards in Leeds. Made in Yorkshire was founded in 2015 to further the interests of Yorkshire Industry. A membership organisation, their aim is to be the leading industry network for innovation, manufacturing and engineering companies. This year they launched the ‘Made in Yorkshire Young Inventor Programme’ in collaboration with colleges across the region and the first winner of this comes from Scarborough! Jasmine Roper, a Year 13 Sixth Form student here at Scarborough UTC, was presented with her award at the Malmaison Hotel in Leeds after impressing judges with her presentation earlier in the year. The competition requires students to engineer a solution to a problem and then present on it, Dragon’s Den style, to a panel of business people through both local and regional heats. Jasmine’s winning product was an automatically inflating life saving aid for use at the beach. This is a great achievement for our town, with Jasmine’s design beating competition from several colleges across the region, including a student from a college in Sheffield who came 2nd, and reflects well on the knowledge, skills and understanding Jasmine has made during her time at the UTC and the bright future of engineering in our town. Well done Jasmine!
